چکیده

We propose a versatile approach to computing the effective toughness of heterogeneous media. This approach focusses on the material property independent of the details of the boundary condition. The key idea is what we call a surfing boundary condition, where a steadily propagating crack opening displacement is applied as a boundary condition to a large domain while the crack set is allowed to evolve as it chooses. The approach is verified and used to study examples in brittle fracture. We demonstrate that effective toughness is different from effective or weighted surface area of the crack set. Furthermore, we demonstrate that elastic heterogeneity can have a profound effect on fracture toughness: it can be a significant toughening mechanism and it can lead to toughness asymmetry wherein the toughness depends not only on the direction but also on the sense of propagation. The role of length-scale is also discussed. & 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

4 Effective toughness of heterogeneous brittle materials

A heterogeneous brittle material characterized by a random field of local toughness K c (x) can be represented by an equivalent homogeneous medium of toughness, K eff. Homogenization refers to a process of estimating K eff from the local field K c (x). An approach based on a perturbative expansion of the stress intensity factor along a rough crack front shows the occurrence of different regimes...

Generation of Love Wave in a Media with Temperature Dependent Properties Over a Heterogeneous Substratum

The present paper deals with the generation of Love waves in a layer of finite thickness over an initially stressed heterogeneous semi-infinite media. The rigidity and density of the layer are functions of temperature, i.e. they are temperature dependent.  The lower substratum is an initially stressed medium and its rigidity and density vary linearly with the depth. The frequency relation of Lo...

Discrete and Three-Parameter Models of Hydraulic Fracture Crack Growth

An infinite elastic medium with a planar crack is considered. The crack is subjected to the pressure of fluid injected at a point on the crack surface. Description of the crack growth is based on the lubrication equation (balance of the injected fluid and the crack volume), the equation for crack opening caused by fluid pressure on the crack surface, the Poiseuille equation related local fluid ...

The Effect of Microstructure on Estimation of the Fracture Toughness (KIC) Rotor Steel Using Charpy Absorbed Energy (CVN)

The proportional relationships between the Charpy absorbed energy (CVN) and the KIC values have been established for a wide variety of steels. Several formulae have been proposed that predict KIC from CVN. The purpose of this study is to investigate, by means of compact testing fracture toughness specimens, the effective role of microstructure for estimation of the fractur...

Poly (vinylpyrrolidone)-Grafted Silica as a Polymeric Cosolvent Catalyst for Organic Transformations in Organic and Aqueous Media

Poly (vinylpyrrolidone)-grafted silica as an organic-inorganic hybrid material was used as an effective heterogeneous polymeric cosolvent catalyst in organic reactions. This modified silica catalyzed nucleophilic displacement of alkyl halides for easy preparation of alkyl thiocyanates, alkyl cyanides, alkyl azides and alkyl aryl ethers. Furthermore, the catalyst was applied for the conversion o...
